A sarong is one of those pieces that earns its place in your summer bag year after year. Lightweight, packable, and genuinely versatile, a good sarong works as a beach cover-up, a wrap skirt, a layer over togs, or something to throw on when you move from the water to lunch. And a NZ summer — with its long beach days, outdoor barbecues and hopping between coastal towns — is pretty much perfect sarong territory.
Here's how to get the most out of yours.
What makes a good sarong
The best sarongs are large enough to wrap properly. A generous rectangle of fabric gives you more options for tying and styling — you're not fighting to cover yourself or wrestling with a knot that won't hold. Look for a lightweight woven fabric that dries quickly and doesn't wrinkle badly after a day scrunched in a bag.
At Friday Flamingo, our sarongs come in a classic black and a polka dot print. Both are designed to work as a beach layer and as a casual summer wrap.
Five ways to wear a sarong
1. Wrapped skirt
The most straightforward way to wear a sarong is as a wrap skirt over your togs. Hold the sarong horizontally behind you, bring both ends around to the front, and tie or tuck at the hip. For a more secure hold, fold the top edge over once before tying. Length is adjustable — fold more fabric under for a shorter style, let it fall further for something closer to a maxi.
2. Beach dress
For a simple cover-up dress, hold the fabric horizontally above your bust, wrap it around your body and tie the ends at one shoulder or at the back of the neck. The knot sits at one side and the fabric falls in a loose column. This works best with a longer sarong where you have enough fabric to bring up over the bust without losing the length.
3. Pareo wrap over pants or shorts
A sarong doesn't have to be worn over togs. Tied low at the hip over shorts or loose pants, it acts as a summer layer with a relaxed, resort feel. Knot it at one side rather than straight at the front for a less structured look.
4. Shoulder throw or shawl
On a NZ summer evening — especially if you're down south, or anywhere near the coast after dark — temperatures can drop quickly. A sarong draped over the shoulders works as a light wrap when it's not quite jacket weather but you want something to take the edge off.
5. Pareo knot top
Hold the sarong lengthwise, bring both ends up and over your shoulders, and tie them at the back or at the nape of the neck for a halter-style top. The fabric folds and drapes at the front. This works well with a high-waisted skirt or wide-leg pants and is a practical alternative to carrying a separate top on a beach day.
Sarong styling tips for summer in NZ
Keep it in your bag. A sarong takes up almost no room and weighs nothing. If you're spending a day at the beach, the river or a summer festival, it's worth having one folded in your tote even if you don't think you'll need it.
Choose a print you'll actually wear. A black sarong is the most versatile — it layers over anything and doubles as a scarf or wrap in other seasons. If you love a print, lean into it. A bold spot or stripe is easy to style and feels intentional rather than an afterthought.
Size up if you're unsure. More fabric always gives you more options for wrapping, tying and adjusting. A sarong that's slightly larger than you think you need is almost always more useful than one that turns out to be too small.
Sarongs and beach cover-ups in NZ summer
New Zealand's summer beach season runs roughly from November through to March, with the peak falling around December and January. The upper North Island — Auckland, Coromandel, Northland, Bay of Plenty — tends to be warmest and most humid. Further south, summer days can be beautiful but the evenings cool faster, which is where the versatility of a sarong earns its keep.
Whether you're at Piha, Kaiteriteri, Mount Maunganui or a local river spot, a sarong is a practical, low-effort beach cover-up that doesn't require much thought. Throw it in, tie it on, get on with the day.
